We were out at a local field day the other day. For those unitiated a field day is where they have lots of stalls selling farm stuff plus a variety of other stuff. So you get to see anything from tractors to handmade kids clothes to fudge to garages. Apart from losing Son it was a pretty good day. We’ve lost him before but never for so long, it was getting to the point where we were starting to think about having to get someone on the PA system to get people to look for him. Thankfully it didn’t quite get to that.
Anyway that’s sort of by the way, the thing that I was thinking about as we wandered round was the variety of people and particularly the increasing number of people who don’t look all that healthy. On further questioning I find that ‘us’ is Melbourne Storm, the rugby league team He supports and who won the Grand Final on Sunday (just in case anyone missed it). Son watched some of the match, interspersed with running round the house trying to involve me in tackles and showing off his football skills.
At six he doesn’t understand the ins and outs of the game but he understands who is winning and losing and like his Dad was extremely happy with the result. I found it fascinating that he associated with the team so strongly that today they became ‘us’ and ‘we won’.
It is amazing the effect that what we watch, read or see can have on us. (more…)
